UCLA Wireless Internet for Mobile Enterprise Consortium (WINMEC) QUARTERLY REPORT, Q1, 2004 I am pleased to inform you that the first quarter of 2004 for the UCLA-Wireless Internet for Mobile Enterprise (WINMEC) was a very productive one.  On February 18th, we hosted the first CIO-forum in partnership with the Anderson Business School and the following Industry CIOs/heads of I.T. participated in panel discussions:

CIOs discussed issues in Global I.T. and Mobile I.T. which was the theme of the event.  The URL for the CIO forum is http://cio-conference.ucla.edu/ and we are now planning for the 2005 CIO forum scheduled for March 7 of next year.  We are now moving forward with respect to creating an advisory board of CIOs starting out by inviting CIOs present at the forum.  If you have not already done so, and you would like to nominate someone to this CIO advisory board, please let us know.  The board meeting is scheduled for October 11th, 2005.  At the CIO forum, we demonstrated the UCLA-WINMEC RFID middleware technology and system (and it was used to register the participants),  reconfigurable wireless sensor network and mobile multimedia visualization technology.  Progress on research and technology development with ample demonstrations to show was a major accomplishment for us this quarter and we are pushing hard to have more research projects in collaboration with you - our industry partners.

Upcoming Events

 

We started planning for the RFID forum scheduled for October 12, 2004. URL http://winmec.ucla.edu/rfid in the UCLA Faculty Center. At this forum, plans are to discuss real-world applications of RFID, to discuss the implications (technology and business) of the Walmart and DoD mandates, challenges, business implications and any formulae to determine ROI, RFID internalization efforts amongst the various supplier community,  typical case studies from different market verticals,  early teething troubles, RFID middleware, Reader technology, Tag technology, etc.  Since this event is coming up soon, please submit speaker nominations to rfid AT winmec AT ucla AT edu .

Please mark your calendars for the next Annual WINMEC forum: March 7 - 10th, 2005, location UCLA Covel Commons.  The theme of this event is "Convergence" with the following specific focus on each day:
- March 7 - CIO Forum
- March 8 - Carrier Forum
- March 9 - Entertainment/Media Forum
- March 10 - WINMEC Technical and Enterprise Forum

Research Support
We started collaborative research with BEI and France Telecom.  From the Intel funded research project, a paper on our Mobile Multimedia system was accepted to WTS 2004 (during the conference this paper won an award).  We also initiated an independent study student project on Mobile Digital Rights management with the Anderson Business School.
