Events

The third quarter of 2004 marks a key milestone which is the beginning of the third year for UCLA-WINMEC (Wireless Internet for the Mobile Enterprise Consortium, WINMEC http://winmec.ucla.edu/).  In this quarter we focused on making progress on the existing R&D projects in our lab, engaging companies to work with us on new collaborative projects, and, demonstrated results and deliverables of previously initiated projects to our industry sponsors.

The upcoming RFID forum scheduled for October 12, 2004 is looking very exciting - http://winmec.ucla.edu/rfid/2004, and we hope to see interested groups from your organization in this event.  Over thirty leading industrial organizations along with UCLA faculty will be speaking.  The WINRFID Middleware technology and platform developed from the WINMEC@RFID research activity will be demonstrated as will be our REWINS (Reconfigurable Wireless Sensor Interface for Networking of Sensors http://winmec.ucla.edu/rewins) and our MOBIME (Multimedia mobile collaborative platform for wireless devices - a paper from this research project recently won an award an at IEEE conference) platforms.  At this forum, plans are to discuss real-world applications of RFID, to discuss the implications (technology and business) of the Walmart and DoD mandates, challenges, business implications, ROI,  case studies from different verticals, RFID middleware, reader technology, tag technology, etc.  Applica!
tions include:  Supply Chain, Warehousing, Shipping, Retail/EPC, Homeland Security, Asset Tracking, Transportation, Traffic Control and Management, Medical and Healthcare, Manufacturing, Entertainment/Media, Hospitality and others.

New RFID Course at UCLA

 
NEW RFID COURSE AT UCLA
A new hands-on, project oriented course is being taught in Fall 2004 on "RFID Systems" (http://wireless.ucla.edu/rfid/2004f/).  We are grateful to T.I. and PDC for their contribution of readers/tags, and this hardware will be supported in the middleware  If you are interested in donating hardware to this course or would like to request information, please contact rfid@winmec.ucla.edu.  We would acknowledge your donation on the course web site.

COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH
Phase I of the collaborative project between member company, BEI Technologies, and WINMEC on wireless sensor interfaces was completed and now Phase II of the project that involves developing prototypes has been initiated.

STATUS OF ONGOING ADVISORY BOARD ACTIVITIES AND FORUMS
iii. The RFID advisory board - Board to work with WINMEC on helping develop the RFID middleware that is scalable as per industry requirements.  To collaborate with WINMEC on RFID pilot development projects.  RFID research web site: http://winmec.ucla.edu/rfid. Entertainment Media Board - Ongoing participation now into second year discussing opportunities and challenges of mobile/wireless devices for Hollywood-based Entertainment/Media industry.  In UCLA, we are working on a multimedia project for mobile environments and another project on Digital Rights Management.
