System Description

SpecimenTrakTM is a Windows based system developed using .NET framework. One of the most significant uses of the system is Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) based tagging and tracking of specimens in Anatomical Materials Programs.
Key features include:

  1. Creation of unique ID based on a coding scheme developed at UCLA-WINME and writing the same to the tag to be embedded in the specimen.
  2. Updating this specimen information to a database with unambiguous relationship to the Donor/Database (SQL) Case number
  3. Inventory check of the specimens based on multiple criteria, such as all types of specimen, specimen from a particular facility, specimen of a specific type, specimen received during any particular year, all specimen harvested from a donor, etc.
  4. Extendibility for the coding scheme employed in the system by way of adding new facility code, specimen group, specimen code, etc.
  5. Access to the functions and data can be restricted by applying appropriate privileges to the user accounts.

A pilot best-of-breed standards-based low frequency RFID technology was selected and a self contained application was developed. The most significant modules in the application are:

  1. Specimen record creation
  2. Inventory check
  3. Tag recycle
  4. Specimen history records
  5. Administration
