NEED FOR THE PRODUCT
Most of the facilities and custodians of organic material do not use a comprehensive tag and track system. The systems and procedures used are quite primitive, in that most records of transactions are maintained on paper charts, which are misplaced or lost quite often. Some of the facilities have started using bar code based tagging and tracking. Bar code systems for tracking organic items have major drawbacks such as short life on account of getting smeared and smudged, extra effort needed on the part of the users in reading the barcodes, difficulty of attaching the bar codes on most of the specimens, and restrictive data-encoding capacity of barcodes. These systems tend to be labor-intensive, hence cataloging and inventory management activities are not carried out in a desired manner and at desired frequencies leading to inaccurate and incomplete records management.
